                                 BESSIE COLEMAN STILL LIFTING SPIRITS      

Introducing famed American aviator, BESSIE COLEMAN, nominated on our 
USA ROUTE 250 BOAST CARDS by fellow intrepid aviator and Francophile, 
Wanda Tharpe, as one of America's 250 Stars.

Endorsed by the Honorable Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Sears, as well;
Wanda Tharpe now asks Magellan Jets of Massachusetts to sponsor Aviatrix 
Coleman, as we light America's 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of 
Independence in our Plot Heard 'round the World with her 250 Stars.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote, I fly because it releases my mind  from the 
tyranny of petty things. Flying released me, too. My name is Wanda Tharpe. 
A military veteran with 21 years of service, I was the first female enlisted 
C-130 (military cargo transport plane) crew member in the 156th Airlift 
Squadron in the North Carolina Air National Guard.   

As a Virginian, I take pride in fellow veteran Virginia Lt. Governor 
Winsome Sears, who performed exemplary service in the United States 
Marine Corps, and now generously endorses my nomination of the gallant 
girl from Atlanta, Texas.

When asked by USA ROUTE 250 to nominate a contender for one of 
America's 250 Stars, I chose sister aviator, Bessie Coleman, who used 
flying to empower herself and change her life. 

Bessie Coleman was a small town Texas girl in the Jim Crow south 
avec des ambitions audacieuses (with some audacious ambitions). Not 
content with her stereotypical job as a manicurist, Bessie wanted more: 
the adventure and exhilaration of aviation; but, the tyranny of racism 
barred her entry into American flight schools.   

So, Bessie turned to Europe. Learning French, then accepted into flight 
training in Le Crotoy, France, she became the first African-American 
woman to earn a pilot’s license. Quelle femme intrépide! (What a brave woman!) 

My plan de vol (flight plan) was similar to Bessie’s. Like her, I grew up in a 
small southern town with few possibilities. The military was my way out and up, 
but offered mostly traditional female roles. So, when a non-traditional aircrew 
position was offered to me, I accepted it. 

The challenge of the position and flying changed me forever. Bessie and I both 
found release and freedom in flying—release from stereotypical roles, freedom 
to soar above the gravity of earthly limitations, freedom to be ourselves.

Bessie Coleman’s will to defeat the obstacles of hardship and racism to 
achieve her dreams define the American spirit. Bessie Coleman’s legacy 
deserves sponsorship by Magellan Jets. 

Wanda Tharpe is a retired French teacher, and served in the military as a 
German translator, intelligence analyst, and aircraft loadmaster. She lives 
in Richmond, VA and loves reading, classic films, and her 5 rescue pets.
